Breaking in my "new" blue-ring fudepen, in quotes since I seem to have lost my inking kit on the train at some point, so I'm in the process of rebuilding the team. You can see first contact on the stage-left eye, where it was more watery at first.

Needed a nonsense shape to scrawl so just went with something vaguely Ringu-ish.

When I studied for a summer in Japan, I got to visit the studio where they filmed the US version of The Grudge.

Also J-horror sucks.

Just between us, the Monkeez set was just an exercise in concepting digital pieces since I am not terribly used to full digital.

All in all, had a good time, but messed up my back marathoning these because I just had to decide to take this opportunity to radically change how I normally sit while drawing out of worry that I've been doing it wrong all these years...

Live and learn...and when you can't live, just listen to people blindly. It always works out. Or so they tell me.

I have hated going to sleep since I was little. Sleep is nice, but going to sleep. Disgusting.

Now that I get to control when my bedtime is, I only sleep when I am exhausted.

One week I remember resisting until I'd collapse in my chair. Good job.

Found a pad of scratch paper sitting around one day along with some incredibly expressive ballpoints.

One that's on its way out, so you can get some nice tones from its deathrattles, and another that's razor sharp for just gorgeously fine lines.

It is the little things in which joy is at its zenith.

This is joy.

This is revenge.

After I lost my Yale beanie, I had to get another head-warmer for the bitter winter in Japan.

So I got the least ridiculous thing I could find, a beanie-hat combo.

It looks neat, but not for me, so I wanted to draw it on someone who maybe could pull it off.

I wanna say this was a sketch from when I had a TV or I was doing a sketch inspired by that one member of Perfume, but I can't remember. I do know I inked this to practice with the G-Pen, though.

Alrighty, live from our cheapo 7-11 grid pocket sketchbook, a little Alexis Blight, with neato eyebrows, caked with as many artistic doohickies I could jam onto the paper, including Copics and my lame-o white out.

An appeal of the cheapie stuff is that it makes you less afraid of ruining a piece and just think, "Meh, let's see what happens," which I feel is something I need to be less precious about art. Drawing live in pen also ironically helps embolden you. Just make a choice and deal with it. Go with it. Think about it if you want, but just do it. You idiot.

So I just went with a risky move I felt wouldn't be correct--adding a much lighter color tint on top of the generally finished base, and well, I messed it up, so I had to coat everything over with the color to smooth out the color-warping.

Still not a Copic scientist after all these years but at least at this point I knew in my gut that color layer was a bad idea. But meh, wanted to see what would happen.
