Fun_CaptainOfTheWatch_P

An old sketch in prep for Inktober '14. Again, that year was all about getting used to the G-Pen.

Wanted a regal sorta space pirate captain vibe.

Fun_Uniformity

Uniforms with the G-Pen for Inktober 14, then.

I bet she has a really boring name, like Nancy, or something.

Or something slightly off like Gwynn instead of Gwen.

A sketch in prep for Inktober 14. I dunno. Wanted to try a uniform, and more involved lines to test the G-Pen, if I recall.

Easter Eggs: JE logo.

Fun_Tee.Beardown

And here's the final of our little "i am the beatdown" shirt, or should I say "beardown"?

Anyway, the title comes from two things, primarily the old Magic adage about identifying "who is the beatdown," famously originated by Michael J. Flores, whose podcast with Patrick Chapin I quite enjoy despite not really being into Constructed myself. People talking passionately and intelligently about anything is always a great listen.

The second namesource is a twist on one of my favorite albums of all time, I am the Movie, from Motion City Soundtrack, which is lamentably calling it quits this year...

And then the design itself is a reference to the Magic slang for a 4/2 4/4 2/2 creature for two mana, affectionately called a "bear." Rather than my more intricate style, I thought a more "cute," clumsy style would be in order.

And then here's what it might look like on Didi from Splinter.

The background is a photo from when I discovered I was standing next to Tokyo Dome one night. I was more pumped by the official Shonen Jump merch shop nearby.

I really liked my little kuma T sketch, so I thought I'd take it to final anyway.

It's based on two little Magicisms.

Inked digitally with Steve Ahn's brush.

Early concept sketches of Didi, but we went in a different direction.

The foundation's there, though.

Fudepen practice while listening to a documentary on H.P. Lovecraft.

Trying to get a sense of colossal scale since I usually only draw one figure at normal size.

You win some, you lose some.

Fun_KyaryOn

A study of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. She used to post really great photos of her outfits on Twitter, but feels like not so much recently, maybe because I'm not online so much lately. Wonder if maybe she's been sort of fading out in Japan. Wonder what that's like.

I didn't expect to like her music, but I have two of her albums now, and would happily snap up more if CDs weren't so expensive here, even at second-hand shops, unless we're talking really old stuff.

One of my favorite tracks is called Drinker, underrated.

Fun_302Crew

A bit of an homage to 302 Crown Steet, where I really got a big chunk of EXP.

I did next to no digital anything back then, and still hold on to that prejudice too dearly I fear, but I wanted to see if I could incorporate more digital into traditional pieces, such as this one.

As long as I look good when I'm old.

Wanted to try a faded out, two-tone look with Copics but I can never quite get it...

But I did enjoy going live on this one, that is no pencils, just fudepen inks.

More from that first comic I wrote in Japan. His name is Ko, he is a powerful vegetarian.

He was based on a dude I used to know. Never smiles.

Looks like I skipped a week, so posting the progress for one of my first fudepen pieces, loosely inspired by Avatar characters, I'd say. Trying and failing, yet ever falling for, that Eric Canete monochromatic Copic look.

Hey! That used to be my backyard in Tokyo.

Making up for accidentally skipping this week with the Copics to one of my very first Fudepen efforts, not live-inked, though. You can still see some pencils underneath.

Ah. I musta skipped the week of April 20, 2015. Making up for it with some old inks.

Vaguely inspired by Korra or Katara here, pretty sure.

This was one of my first fudepen pieces!

Hare_KuniConcepts

A trio of concepts we didn't use for the Kuniyoshi piece.

I really liked the kinda stereotypical shonen anime arrangement on the left. It was to have Mario Bros.-style clouds, even.

The middle was neat, but it would have been grueling to get everything lined up perfectly, so I'm actually happy they didn't go with that one!

The last one was just pure goofy shonen; made so many sketches for this, just wanted to mess around.

While we're posting old Tokyo Werewolf sketches, inspired by Chopper, obviously, how about some of my favorite DJ clips?

One of the best clips ever is Welcome to the Show by J Dilla. There's a bittersweet backstory behind this, the ironically titled final track of the final work of the late luminary, as I later found out.

Another oldie from the sketchbook, did some sketches for my old classmate, nicknamed the Tokyo Werewolf. He's really into music, DJs even, so I drew some werewolves (I presume) doing DJ-like things. I also don't really draw "cute" things too much, so thought it'd be a good chance to give it a go.

This is that famous "crate digging" thing I've heard so much about.
Say, want to cry a little? Check out this J Dilla mini-doc, especially here. Oh, man.

Fun_PartyInTheUSJ

Pretty sure they weren't at USJ when this happened, but it just sounds funnier, ok?

Anyway, there's a personality in Japan named Ike who's from the US who snapped a neat photo during a meeting, and I thought I'd try the fudepen on a "live ink" portrait, no pencils, in my little pocket sketchbook.

International people in Japan are fascinating...it's somewhat complicated the longer you stay here. Tourists don't see all of Japan. You have to live here for a bit to really get it. To see it. To feel it. I hope he's happy. I hope they aren't forcing him to do anything he doesn't want to. I dunno.

Party.

My gosh, can't believe I've never posted this.

Flipping through my old sketchbook, spotted a model of Chika, the hero from HonPonBon, the first comic I wrote in Japan.

Miffed to see Kyary Pamyu Pamyu do the giant toothbrush shtick later on...

Picture me, like, "Keep cool, kid,"

"Stay straight a stray spool, Sid,"

"Eat full, up and down watch me pool-skid."

Diary of a mad Balkan Veemon,

It's all free, mon,

Pass it, pwn the left hand side, tool lid.

Just grab a maru pen and ad lib,

And ad rock, etcetera,

Just don't forget to rule, kid.

It always bums me out when artists post "boring" stuff...like cars.

Like, who cares?

Woo, it's bouncing off the ground as if that gives it any life.

But that Fudepen Black can handle straight lines and improvised details quite well.

So there's that.

Also, Tonka is a truck company, right?

Who cares.

Fools.
