A Splinter concept.

There's actually a super subtle reflection of Didi hiding in the green.

This ended up looking a little like those CG French-based anime, like Code Lyoko, at least on this screen.

But I just wanted to do some cel-shaded coloring with Didi.

Fun_DidididididiDo

Short on time lately, particularly since I wanted to go play Magic for the first time in seemingly forever for a change, so thought I'd digitally ink, then color an old Didi piece.

But for this one, I wanted to color as fast as I could, so I tried flatting then stickering the colors, intensely saturating that sticker, and then masking out non-highlighted areas.

In this way, my chosen colors, which were preemptively darker than local, would contrast with the "highlights," which would serve as lighting for the piece.

This is what just the highlighted areas looked like, so this layer atop the flats is what gave the colors definition.

I tried using a smoother brush for the inks, rather than my usual, chunkier Steve Ahn's Ultimate Brush, and I have to say the crispness this smooth brush gives is quite pleasant in its own way.

The background was a photo from a roadtrip, I believe, back in the old country. The old country...

I was a bit frustrated so I decided to digitally ink an old Didi sketch since nothing else felt feasible...the difference in emotion between the sketch and final is kinda neat, come to think of it. I also like how the color version really ties the image more thematically to the comic after all.

I had an art get-together Tuesday far off in Harajuku, and only being able to make it back to my home station around 11:30pm, I got stopped by the police as I was headed for the bus. I've heard these are supposed to be "random" stops, but why on Earth (specifically Japan) am I always chosen for these idiotic quiz shows? Oh, wait, it's because I'm visibly not Japanese, perhaps especially because I have dark skin. I've noticed they tend to search me when I'm at a main station, but no love for the out-of-the-way spots. Racism is fine as long as it's convenient, I guess.

What sickened me about this latest stop was how thoroughly they searched me. I don't know if they are legally allowed to do that and were taking advantage of me for a power trip--in the US, police need a warrant or probable cause to search you legally. I have been lightly searched before, but it was gross how closely they examined my belongings, including my wallet. I've said it before and I'll say it again, though, I'd take Japan's annoying racism over the US's violent racism any day.

As much as I love Japan, don't kid yourself, this place is racist, and I experience forms of racism on a nearly daily basis. Most of it is entirely innocuous, like people giving you WAY too much space when walking around you on the sidewalk, if they hadn't already dashed to the other side of the street first--an old lady nearly sprinted to do this one time. Some will walk right in the middle of the road to avoid being within breath of you. I like to play a game where I match these streetwalkers' pace so they have to keep walking on the street if they want to refuse to join me on the sidewalk like a human being. The best part is if they act like I'm being the jerk.

Back when I used to take the train daily, people seemingly would rather ride the outside of the train than sit next to you, but whatever, in that case, excellent--less people crowding you in cramped quarters. There's also the phenomenon of people blatantly staring at you, like you're a monkey in a tutu reading a newspaper, but while I ordinarily dislike eye contact, nothing is more satisfying than staring down people who don't even try to hide that they're staring at you. Again, they often act as if you're the problem when they finally look away, flustered.

Anyway, those racist police apparently had an issue with the scissors I kept in my bag, which I've always had since the rural school days. They acted like A) they had never conceived of people carrying scissors, B) they couldn't imagine why anyone would have scissors at all, and C) I might possibly have had notions to use this as a weapon some day. I hate how they have to (over)act so clueless, as if they have never experienced or could adapt to experiencing such an event as someone having regular old, convenience-store-bought scissors--this includes any time any JP service is confronted with a situation that isn't strictly textbook-training routine. They have to put on a show like they are trying their darndest to gee-golly figure out the situation for ya, but it's a plumb noodle-scratcher, by gum.

How brain-dead are you that you can't either adjust whatever limp hamster is running your processes, or at least give the person you're inconveniencing and degrading the courtesy of not putting on the middle school drama club production of "Man Checks Bag"?

They know they are delaying me but they always act like what is going on is beyond their control, as if they are running a computer program that is simply loading and we can only sit and watch until the status bar fills, but meanwhile they keep going over and over the same thing, down to measuring how long the scissors are and asking what they were for, multiple times, respectively. Assuming both steps are necessary, addressing them once should be enough for competent police of non-goldfish descent.

I have complied with all your stupid questions, allowed you to search me despite feeling it was unwarranted, and satisfactorily provided my walking papers, get out of my face and let me catch the bus to get to my foreigner-permitted housing, which is as always, a racist million miles away from any convenient station.

Oh, wait, I missed the bus by one minute and literally saw it drive away as I approached the bus stop, so now I have to wait for half an hour in the ~0C degree cold for the next one because the bus schedule guts itself after midnight. Yes, also, it is now after midnight, you idiots. No, your smiling, aww-shucks chuckling, and apologizing for keeping me doesn't magically remedy the situation.

I got home and felt sick, exhausted, and unable to continue work or even sketch. Plugging away on this the next day helped, I guess. And so that's the story behind this piece and why I made Didi's shadow smile. Because of those idiots. Those racist idiots.

That said, I'd rather fear being delayed by racist cops than shot in the head by them. So there's that.

Not normal,

Fun_DidiPizza

I knew I wanted to color this pizza box piece, and was on the fence about Copics vs. digital. I was on the heels of a Twitter deadline, had just seen a KNKL guide on photo filter effects, and was feeling more pressure than usual to go digital, so I decided to go in with some Photoshop, hoping to see how fast and simply we could color rather than paint. After posting to Twitter, with like a minute to go before deadline, I decided to bring it a little further, as like a hypothetical teaser poster for Splinter.

Here's the textless version. As far as bitter, bitter, inside jokes go, I should note I hate any permutation of the word "friend," and use such a word only with extreme care, if ever. I have allies and associates, mostly people/someone "I know" but I simply cannot use the f-word loosely. It's too dear.

Back on topic, here it's a little easier to see the duality that we played up to honor that theme of the comic. You'll note half of her is darker and the other half even has a phantom-y effect over it, lifted (albeit more subtly) from this old Didi PhotoJam.

This's what it looks like when we take away all the trendy filters, and yes, I'm actively practicing those effects...I don't normally embrace fads of any fashion, but I legitimately like the slightly gritty effects you can get.

Anyway, this was the Twitter version we squeaked in just under deadline. I looked aight to publish, but after the cookie of posting, I obviously felt the mouse to give it a little more.

A little Didi sketch from our planning session...

This comic was (is) lightly Magic themed...still going ahead with it, despite the banning that renders it not as present as when it was written.

In any case, this comic was to be a warm-up for my real effort, but I just learned during Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad Sunday that the whole universe of that comic is in jeopardy. But my disappointment is not even about that.

It's about the utter disrespect and disregard Wizards has shown its most outstanding people. People are being lied to. Is this not outrageous?

I feel I'm in a similar boat in a different ocean, so I really feel for these guys, though obviously their strife is far greater. But there comes a breaking point.

Ok, having gotten up to date on the archives, our new focus is Didi.

This was actually one of the first drawings with my new fudepen, so the ink was pleasantly a little lighter than usual. Typically takes a couple drawings before the pen really gets going.

Fun_GGgirl

Flipping through an old sketchbook and noticed an early take at a "gamer girl"-type character.

It's been a long-standing goal of mine to make a character like that, as in non-pandering, legit, etc. Gwen from Ben 10 is probably one of my favorite "nerd" female characters, which this design borrows from a bit, I feel. As a testament to how great she was, I forgot to write "female" just now in the previous sentence and had to add it in during editing, that's how unqualified and natural that "geeky" character felt.

That's what I aspire to, just make a killer character that anybody could relate to, but that girls in particular could feel happy with, even proud of. Guys have tons of representation everywhere obviously, so like adults, male characters don't really interest me in terms of being the "hero" of the story, stemming from that same principle that they don't really have the odds stacked against them, and if it's on a platter, who cares? Come to think of it, I believe I've only ever written one story where the "hero" was a male, but even that one was driven by the female character he encounters. And writing that felt only so exciting, since it's like, realistically, what's the worse that could happen? I guess that's why most of my male characters die in the end! That way it's like guaranteed that it doesn't work out for them later on.

Anyway, the nerd-girl character so often feels forced, which comes off like a massive disservice to everybody, especially anybody who could really use a character to look up to. I want girls to feel like going to play Magic or whatever is just like anything--listening to music, going to the movies, watching TV, whatever: it's just something one can do and have anywhere to a passive to intense interest in, but with no special qualifications or expectations involved.

It was a little bittersweet when Jackie Lee and Melissa DeTora went to Wizards because that meant two notable players just vanished from where perhaps they could really make the most impact on young players. Yes, making Magic is excellent and aspiration-inspiring, but there's no getting away from it not having the same profile as playing at the top level and showing people that anybody can become a great player. In fact, I couldn't name another female player, though I know there's that one Lands-In-Fronter, which I am morally opposed to. On balance, how many current R&D people can typical players name beyond Maro and say Aaron Forsythe? Of course Melissa DeTora is currently able to play again after her R&D run ended, but as I understand it she and Wizards seem to be looking to have her back on board again, so who knows how long she'll be someone you can hope to see slugging it out on the big stage?

In more practical terms of representation, if you read, "this electronics store's customers say this TV is a great buy," you would naturally assume a good portion, even 50% of these people were female. If you read "this MTG shop's customers say this sleeve is a great buy," you could realistically expect no females involved in that equation. That's brutal and sad. But I mean, it's entirely realistic.

I myself am a minority, in that I see almost no dark-skinned players anywhere, but I am male and I don't particularly identify with my own race, so on the whole I don't feel excluded or marginalized aside from being a non-Japanese person playing Japanese players in Japan. Yes, I feel dismissed or disregarded for being non-Japanese, but I know I can't possibly feel the sheer exclusivity and even fear or literal terror female players must endure at times.

If I'm being totally frank, I kinda hate playing Magic in Japan because too often Japanese players treat you like you aren't a human being for not being Japanese, and they play as robotic and silently as possible (but are all laughs, chit-chat, and sound effects every other round with other players). They behave as if you wouldn't understand a word should they bother to utter any customary narration of their moves. It makes playing and tracking things tedious, like we've both decided to do our taxes or read the phone book together in silence. Or more accurately, one is silent while the other half explains what page he's on as he flips through the literature, with the meaning clear enough through action and tone to effectively communicate in lieu of actual linguistic comprehension. It's annoying. But it's just annoying. I don't fear for my safety at any time from their off-putting behavior. I don't feel like I'm not allowed into the party, just merely not invited to dance.

I remember when I was little, my family stopped into some out-of-the-way rib shack or steakhouse and that was the first time in my generally race-neutral existence I felt weird or unsafe because of my skin color. The place was wall-to-wall white people and country music and good-old-boy garb. There was something in the air. I could feel people staring at us. I expected someone to ask us if we might enjoy eating elsewhere or getting one of those "Are we gonna have a problem here?" courtesies or something outlandish like that, that's how weird it felt in there. I felt queasy. But we ate our cooked cow parts in peace and left and never went back. I imagine that must be on the trajectory of what female gamers have to live with. We could go to any other steakhouse if we wanted to (and did) and have a better experience (and do), but how are you going to roll some dice and shuffle up some cards but from so many venues before you're out of viable options? Not saying that all, or even most shops are sludge, but when the world is so small, even small percentages of dud spots must magnify their negative, possibly irreversible impact on people.

Ultimately, it's sad that it's so cartoonishly rare to see girls in Magic shops. In my JP-lifetime, I've probably seen no more than a single-digit total of female players in Magic shops/venues in Japan, and I went to GP Chiba '15. I played this one girl in Hareruya one time, and I was struck with how cool, care-free, and comfortable she seemed to be, like she was just watching TV or at the movies. She was the only female in this mega-shop that holds 300 seats in its play space alone, not counting the population occupying the actual shop and office area of the floor space. I wish every female player could have that same aura of confidence and inclusion, especially if that is the one thing keeping them from heading out and enjoying gaming like anybody else, and I hope a character I make can contribute to that in some way. That would be incredible.

And here's the final of our little "i am the beatdown" shirt, or should I say "beardown"?

Anyway, the title comes from two things, primarily the old Magic adage about identifying "who is the beatdown," famously originated by Michael J. Flores, whose podcast with Patrick Chapin I quite enjoy despite not really being into Constructed myself. People talking passionately and intelligently about anything is always a great listen.

The second namesource is a twist on one of my favorite albums of all time, I am the Movie, from Motion City Soundtrack, which is lamentably calling it quits this year...

And then the design itself is a reference to the Magic slang for a 4/2 4/4 2/2 creature for two mana, affectionately called a "bear." Rather than my more intricate style, I thought a more "cute," clumsy style would be in order.

And then here's what it might look like on Didi from Splinter.

The background is a photo from when I discovered I was standing next to Tokyo Dome one night. I was more pumped by the official Shonen Jump merch shop nearby.

I had an old package of Pocky laying around and wanted to spruce it up.

At the same time, I scored some sweet, obscure Copics I have been craving to test out.

I also needed to figure out Didi's color scheme.

The complication is in the skin.

I sort of envision her as sorta Japanese since that's all I have for reference around here.

I don't really think in terms of color, but I do know I have the inherent "white" complexion drilled into my imagination.

I grew up in the US. I have to force myself to think in terms of darker skin tones. There was a Boondocks comic about this.

It's a bummer. I find it hard to believe you can exist today and not feel the pressure of that default light-skin imagination.

There was a study about this. What race is a stick figure?

Anyway, she lives in Japan, she's Japanese-ish.

Pretty sure I want Didi to have a military type jacket.

And the Dimir shirt has to be purpley, which makes her hair and eyes kind of sink into that.

But I always get tripped up on skin...
