Fun_Looming

I've heard such great things about Andrew Loomis, so I'm starting to study him.

Hope that gets the magic going.

Hare_Fear.TieBreakers

This was the very first comic I ever made for Hareruya, as an audition piece. It was about a giant GP in Chicago were even excellent-performing players just got murdered purely on tiebreakers. We hadn't even named the series yet, but I wanted to call it Fear, though we settled on Fear and Removal.

From the get go, one of my goals with the comic was to represent girls in Magic. All the guys are throwaway characters for the most part, but I wanted the comic not to be able to function in any meaningful way if you took out the female characters.

After this one, they asked for another sample, so I imagine we'll show that one soon enough, but this has never been seen by any human aside from the core editors. The turnaround time here was like two days, so I didn't even get to scan the pencils, just a photo and off to inks.

By the sig, it looks like this was drawn 6/14, but we're logging it for 6/13 on 2/19/15!

Hare_Fear.Charmy

Here is a comic I did for Hareruya, from our little Fear and Removal series, themed on the Khans of Tarkir charms. The concept was just what each clan's kind of pick-up line would be.

The punchline voice was inspired by Boogie, using his turtley voice.

Easter Eggs: Handsome mugshot guy. Do you like luxury skit. Plus all the backgrounds are for the appropriate Khans trilands. Glasses on the Jeskai guy.

Posted from the future for Valentine's Day 2015.

Com_TheSagaSaga

I recently got terribly close to booking my hugest deal yet. This Danish company via a New York advertising agency wanted me to design a mascot (Saga) for them.

This latest brush with destiny came like my other nigh-pro experience, via a Yalie who noticed my work and passed it along. Thank you, T.P.!

The company ended up going with a video promotion rather than print, so I got the ax, but these were the brainstorming sketches I submitted to get the design process going.

They weren't too specific, but I kept getting notes about how the client is "Danish," which I thought was a polite way of asking me for a blonde/blue design, after a google-image of "Danish people" revealed mainly that.

The other bit of description was that they wanted the costuming to be Eskimo-y but at the same time for her to look like a "Vargas girl," which was mildly confusing since it's kinda like asking for hot ice...she's supposed to be bundled up, you know? Anyway, this audition was on really short notice, so no time for questions, just draw/color like the wind!

I don't like how this Katara-influenced Saga turned out...
This one's my favorite. We're fully incorporating the logo's colors, and I'm drawing the same way I drew the faces on my very first purely digital comic, which is my favorite way to digi-draw: with pressure-sensitive opacity, you get to really simulate pencil drawing; feels way more expressive, really fun.

They also talked about having a baby seal as Saga's companion, so these last two brought him into the mix. In my head, the first seal design was a burly little baby seal from the Bronx or something, while this second one is more of a realistic, cute baby seal.

I was marathonning these designs after finishing a comic, so I was super exhausted, and only had time to turn in these four designs, but it ended up looking pretty ok. I loved that I got to play with Oakland's colors, which is my home team, homie.

And so ends the Saga saga.

Fun_PostConPost

Got back from Comic-Con. Exhausted. But we're back in the saddle, eight million times wiser after shoving my stupid little drawings in front of paid professionals for the past four days.

By Friday night it was looking grim, Saturday night was just about the nail in the coffin, and I was ready to shout I Told You So to anyone who believed in me, but Sunday, man...Sunday went freakishly smooth and ended my hazing on a ridiculously Hollywood-ending series of high notes. So now I've got a game plan for the first time since do-well-in-high-school-to-get-into-a-good-college.
