These were some old posterboards I did for Yale Comics Club's booth at the Freshman Activities Bazaar. I wanted ours to stand out from the mob of posterboards, and I'm happy to say we succeeded: people would swing by and at the very least just glare at our poster from afar before carrying on dismissively. Oh how they would uncomfortably giggle when they realized that I realized that they had no intention of actually coming to our table (I would shake my head disapprovingly once we made eye contact).

Anyway, the above was my first effort at an unconventional poster. This mighta been how I met first total-stranger fan, actually: someone at the bazaar recognized my [first] OriChar, Kelly Ryan from Darling Find, on the poster so she came up to me to tell me she like my comics! Aww!

This was our most recent poster. This time starring Zero Like Me's dynamic duo with a featured spot going to the putrid mr. jack kelly, and guest spots for some other characters and random blown up panels and sketches. The blank bottom parts were to be covered by flyers and stuff like last year's. Drawing at that scale and with sharpies is pretty forgiving, so it's not as intimidating as you might think; it's actually pretty fun. It's just tricky and achey drawing that big on weirdly-shaped cardboard, but imagine if we had a team working on this rather than a soloist.

 

Anyway, another successful poster. I hope they continue experimenting in the ensuing years...

Fun_Escape!Arrives

Just to update what we're looking at here, Escape! is now out in print! You can find some incredible original comics, and a beautiful cover, but we've also collected a bunch of great reprints from the Herald and the YDN.

Free bookmark not included with purchase of free Escape!. Only available while supplies last. Void where prohibited. Please drink responsibly.

All my reprinted comics that were posted on this site with "updated art coming soon" have been touched up so they now look better than originally printed, and are in line with their Removal versions.

But what I'm most excited about is that you may now view certain comics "uncensored." I don't like that sensationalist word, but it's technically true, and it's hecka funny saying that I've been censored. Multiple times.

Imagine that.

The YDN's Zero Like Me gets a section.

So if you're a Rumpus person and you think you're clever second guessing me, guess what, you're not. Yeah, I said it. Just kidding. But seriously, now you can see the original for yourself. Isn't that neat how the depth you're looking for in a comic actually did/does exist?

The Herald's Zero Like Me: Zero Romance also gets a section.

No censorship issues there, just updated aesthetics, but that fool jack kelly does get to print some cut material, too. Might want to drink that all in, it'll have to last for a while.

We're about to hand in the art for the last issue of the Record for the year, so I can comfortably say this is my favorite piece I did this year. I remember jumping for this assignment when I read the art description--emo kids talking rock.

This piece was satisfying for a couple of reasons--it played on my favorite brand of music (not the band, though), and the people who listen to it. Plus everything in the shot but the big chunk of dialogue was pretty much my idea, but even with that chatter, I had taken the liberty of whittling down a huge, clunky block of text to what you see there. I added "sweet" as a kicker. I've received positive feedback over choosing to place these guys before a Hot Topic.

Easter Egg: "Yale" is written between the two in the pavement cracks.

The costumes have a fun little story behind them. The guy on the bottom is wearing Deadboy's costume, a character I created senior year of high school. His very own comic didn't launch, but I've still got the story and a rewrite floating around in the file I keep for everything related to him.

As for the other guy, who's opening the door, I modeled his costume save the gloves after Loide's "Carpe Diem" title character. I had just read Jambalaya Fall '06, and that story made me instantly want to join the Yale Comics Club. So it's cool how everything worked out.

After recently looking at my horrible, very first submission for the Record, I realize how far I've come since. And I look forward to more good times with the Record next year, including easing into my new role as "Aspiring" Art Director, as the current boss guides me into the role.
