nts_dollarmenuballer

note to self #76: saduation

A bit of bad news: jack kelly, creator of note to self, is still fully in use of his digits, so his comics yet continue in this collection called "dollar menu baller," kicking off with a comic that has no relevance to anything at all because being a Yale graduate in fact rocks. Everybody everywhere is falling over themselves not only just to hire you, but to give you RIDICULOUS sums of money for important, world-changing work. And people don't just want you on their team, they want you LEADING their team (to victory, glory, and the acquisition of casual Fridays). I mean, you went to frickin' Yale, man! Yale! That's almost as good as Harvard. And besides, the Harvard guy they tried to hire passed on the job, anyway. But whatever, look, even though graduation may seem like a looming death specter (particularly since you literally will die after you graduate, as is the alarmingly common fate of every single Yale graduate since 1702) rest assured, life only gets better after you graduate. Trust me.

note to self #77: hairstyle

Oh, jack kelly, what are you trying to tell us? Either sign up for the al-Qaeda or sign up for the parade. Either way, just stay outta the deep south. Or the Republicans' eye sights and cross-hairs.

note to self #78: choose your own mehdventure

So the truth comes out, jack kelly--you're adopted and are therefore a second class family member in your father's eye, regardless of what your mother tells you. Not that I or anyone with a brain cares, but how did you find out you were adopted? Was it as dramatic and heartfelt as they make it on TV? Or did they wait till you were old enough to watch The Lion King on VHS? And then when you saw a sobbing Simba sidle up to a freshly corpsed Mufasa, did your dad turn to you you and say, "See that, adopted son? That's the kind of love I'll never have for you."? And then did he give you the back of his hand as he demanded you make him another sandwich, after which he mooshed it on your head and laughed in sync with the cackling hyenas on screen? And then to make it up to you did he then show you two tickets to The Lion King on Broadway and then say, "Sorry, adopted son, I was just joking around. But look what I got! Two tickets for us to go see The Lion King on Broadway! And by 'us' I mean 'me and my real son!' " at which point his biological son steps out smirking from behind the couch, and they leave you alone in the cold, empty living room as the tv screen flickers dead? And through the window did you spy your dad triumphantly carrying his proud and true son out to the fancy car you're not allowed in? Then did they speed off into the night while giving you a synchronized dual middle finger through the rearview mirror? And then did you find a small wad of cash on the counter with a note from your dad that says, "This money is for pizza, adopted son. It is a bunch of two dollar bills because you are like a bunch of two dollar bills: queer."? Was that how it happened? WHY ARE YOU CRYING, jack kelly? It's just a question! Geez!

note to self #79: prejudice

Oh, jack jelly, how can anyone graduate from Yale and become a washed-up has-been in every aspect of his character, be it intellectual, artistic, or otherwise? That's simply absurd! I personally know drugged-up Yalies who are stoned out of their minds most of the day and they're still holding down successfully. I get that you want to fight stereotypes, and perhaps your boldness should be commended, but I would never commend you for anything short of shooting a terrorist leader in the eye. Did you shoot a terrorist leader in the eye? No. So stop looking to me for approval. And get yourself some self-respect. And a job.

note to self #80: theory

Enough jack kelly, stop trying to impress me with your mindless namedropping. I mean, who does that?! Look, yes, it's widely documented how the young Mr. Spielberg cracked the spine off my copy of Lynda Barry, after I kindly offered yet again to share my book with him during our graphic novels seminar. Goodness knows the poor guy was on crippling financial aid, and thus probably couldn't afford the books himself! Regardless, even though the cover subsequently and permanently popped off the binding, and just because the kid made no reference at all to the decapitation he executed right in front of me and everyone else in the seminar while he busily pontificated on whatever he was busy pontificating on--none of that gives you the right to harbor a deep-seated, one-sided bloodfeud, least of all because he, like so many of your classmates in that graphic novels seminar, didn't actually care about comics as a medium, so much as a fun and easy A. So carry on your soul-debilitating grudge if you wish, jack kelly, but I will play no part in it! Yes, it would be a fraction of a twitch of a blink of his eye to acknowledge his crime, let alone replace the book, but that's not the point. The point is that after reading his scathing Spring Fling review in The Yale Herald, you're just bitter and angry that he of all people holds anti-JEW beliefs. And that he got a namedrop in a RADWIMPS song. Ok, I'll admit that last one stings a little.

FOR THE HORDE!!

Zero Like Me #39: How We Do
<- Previous...Next->
-First-

Easter Eggs: Really fun--I'll just give characters' names rather than who they're based on: (L-R) Justin, Arthur, Teddy, Dan, [negligible Calhoun girl], Iceman, Price. "Yale" in Panel 1.

Fun Facts: I proposed a hee-haw-larious (I mean that) script at the Herald but it got killed...but I finally crossed that item off my bucket list with this comic, so how do you like them apples, Herald? Also, I really think highly of everyone in this comic--in the off chance these people stop by, please know I think you all are great and I always get at least a little nervous if I see you walking around!

Baa: The dude on the far left can make you cry, I felt like dirt when I discovered I accidentally made the guy to his right feel bad and I may never feel like I've made it up to him, the guy to his right broke my book when I shared it with him during my graphic novels class but he never said a word about it(!), the guy to his right makes James Bond look like a dork, the guy to his right is just the kind of guy I'd want to lead me into battle, the guy to his right is probably neat but I've never really seen him before--I just wanted to let him get some revenge on Zero.

Also, I saw Stiles win bladderball! Who woulda thought? Also, also: does Calhoun even have students? What's up with that?

Final art coming soon,

Fun_RolloverRifle

I hate the word "blog" and I hate the idea of having one, especially making more than one post a day, as if anyone gives a poop what you have to say. I justify having this site because it's never been about the words, it's been about the art: I'm providing a (study) break for people to check out some drawings with no expectation that anyone actually reads the text, that way the only time people lose is the time it takes to look at a picture, which isn't a lot.

So I don't want this site to be any more than me telling stories about the art, and since I'm going to be booked up for the foreseeable future with running published work on Fridays, Mondays, and Wednesdays, there will be no room for "Fun" posts any more. I don't want to post on more days, so I'll just throw in Fun posts now and then.

Which brings us to Yale-a-Palooza 2, which changed its name to something else this year. Anyway, it was yesterday, and I camped out for as much of it as possible while drawing today's ZLM, but also sketching some of the artists during breaks.

Up first, pictured above, is the front man for The Rollover Motive. He debuted two new songs and something of a 'fro. The song about Dan was particularly wonderful. He played BS, too, which was incredible! Excellent set all around! To my dismay, I've never been able to sketch him in action very well, but this one's an improvement, kinda.

The only other drawing worth sharing is this one, of (former?) co-front man of Rifle. I gave it an honest effort, but...well, it was very tough to get into the set, although his on-stage antics were entertaining. He's got quite a unique voice, almost like Beast Boy from Teen Titans, which is pretty cool, but I get a heavy Bob Dylan sorta vibe from him, and I can't stand Bob Dylan (or the Beatles, or Bruce Springsteen--which apparently means we're supposed to go to fisticuffs, according to his Herald A&E review of Springsteen's last album; you are un-American, sir). I've been waiting to use this pun for a while, so here it goes: after hoping for an improvement from the last time I saw him perform, I was bummed to find it was more of the same old spiel. Boom!

Anyway, highlights include a former Sandy Gill Affair member performing a massive expansion on the great Jake Pop Medley, meanwhile debuting some much stronger pipes on the recently solo artist. Suitcase of Keys also put on a fine show, although I didn't really feel that usual kick from my favorite track of theirs, "Fallen Leaves," when the bass picks up. Still a lot of fun.

Finally, I was bummed Laura Z. didn't play. I wanted to make up for last time, so I was getting ready to draw a real nice sketch of her playing, so that I could present it to her after the show, but she ended up not hitting the stage, unfortunately.

So it goes,

Fun_ExtraTobacco

I started drawing this up New Year's Day, and after a hiatus, completed it just a few minutes ago.

So I couldn't decide what to write for this piece, but I will say that every time I let my mind get to ambling, I just start cracking up like an idiot.

Anyways, I suuuure wish the Yale Herald had a scanner. If only there was someone on staff who could help...

Fun_PurpleRock

Heads up, Batman, it's sketches from the Purple Crayon's Midnight Madness/Senior Show plus the Battle of the Bands 2008.

Sadly, there weren't many usable sketches from the Crayon's year-end show, but it was a heartwarming send-off for the Crayon's sole senior, Benji.

Alright, well, I got depressed walking back after Benji's exit speech, partially from having witnessed something great in his final performance, but mostly from seeing him leaving friends.

It freaks me out that there's no guarantee I'll have anyone see me off when I graduate, especially seeing the absolute opposite in his having a gang of Crayons, who he was a true asset to, plus a room full of people eager to see him do what he does.

It's also frightening how he can commemorate four years with the Crayon, while the only potential four year groups I've got are the Record and Quizbowl. But the former has soured into a reluctant, pained loyalty and I've basically quit the latter.

Anyway, it would have been great if Benji's final show were as riotous as the WildnOut show, but of course it was easily better than the Ex!t Players or the Viola Question.

But come to think of it, it was eerie how the final skit was Benji in a room alone trying to fall asleep.

* * *

Battle of the Bands 08 was alright.

This Theo fellow popped out of nowhere with a band and even sang!

That was worth the ticket alone, just for the shock!
It sounded like they said the band was called Nyquil, and I admit they were kinda putting me to sleep. I really, really wanted to like the band, but they just weren't too engaging that night.

It was a bummer that this guy's band, Catch, wasn't playing.

Goodness knows there were way too many meh bands playing. Why not get surer bets up there?

. . .

A few pre-frosh came up to me throughout the night to check out my sketchbook. Flattering.

One pre-frosh, a landscapist, thought I was 2012, too.

If only.

Farnam...
I wish I could relive Freshman Year for half a decade.

The newness, the welcoming, the uncertainty, the auspiciousness.

Getting lost looking for JE, Commons, WLH. Exploring JE. Figuring out the Law School.

Giving fake names, knowing everyone doesn't know everyone yet.

Having the I'm-a-freshman excuse.

Still thinking I'm a high schooler.

Finding my feet before fitting in.

Being caught up in all the lore.

Thinking that the Record's great.

Following mighty juniors.

Knowing that FroCos are there.

Meeting my first suitemates, thinking this'll be perfect forever.

Well, anyway.

I've been trying to draw this guy in action for a while, but never seem to catch him long enough.

It's a shame that the Sandy Gill Affair's audio seemed to have died. They really deserved to win, if not be a finalist. And not even Mad Mad Prophets placed. What were the judges thinking?

If you were to judge this band by their performance that night, no, they shouldn't have won, but that was because you couldn't hear anything. Based on their past performances and their monumental improvement, they had enough credibility to warrant a bump in whatever score the judges blindly assigned them.

This lady's band was so not first place-y. Boring acoustic stuff.

Who actually enjoyed this performance so much that they said, "Hey, let's put them in Spring Fling over these other clearly more entertaining bands"?
It makes zero sense.

Mad Mad Prophets, Sandy Gill, and Catch (which didn't play that night) are just plain better; why didn't anyone recommend them?

I cannot figure out how anyone with a clear conscience could have ignored those bands and picked Z's band, who I'm sure is a nice person, etc., etc. but also robbed more deserving groups of play time.

Oh, the girl at left was ninja-ing her way around photographing bands and stuff.

I think she was with one of the bands, actually.
A 2012. How lucky. He has no idea. I think I hate him. He gets Freshman Year next year. Watch him be in JE. That's all I need.

I think this guy was in a band called Flocks, or as I read later, Flux.

Well, that's it.

Closing thought: Battle of the Bands, you are a mean, shameless joke.
