MTGinktober notes Day 29, "Lesson," starring Professor Onyx and Aron, Benalia's Ruin!
I kept flipping on who to cast for our Substitute Teacher--an actual teacher; Koth, of earlier meme fame; or Phage, who's already kinda hitting the famous pose. It's probably funnier having Onyx chew someone out, so we went with that, and she even has a card called Professor's Warning, which was perfect. But in case this idea wasn't panning out on paper, my fallback idea was Asmo doing an Instagram-style cooking show--that woulda been neat, too.
Fun Facts: This is Liliana Vess's twelfth MTGinktober appearance, and of these, Professor Onyx's third, and the character's second appearance this year, definitely one of the heavy hitters, though characters with various distinct depictions--Onyx, regular, and Lil'--do have an advantage. Anyway, Aron debuts cuz, while B. Aron mighta looked like the actual actor and even has glasses that can play like the actor's goggles, A-ron was right there, but to be fair, we don't see much of him in the composition anyway.
Easter Eggs: The blackboard has one of my favorite zone-out jams, "Mans Not Hot" by Big Shaq (DJ Yung Vamp remix). I figure she'd write her name on the board, so I put nyx-style stars next to that part for added flavor. And I got to sign the board itself, which felt fitting, particularly with the school-style date. I was going to depict the exact "You done messed up, A-aron" pose, but it was too similar to an earlier pose this year, however, just a few seconds later we hit this way more famous pose, which I totally forgot originated from this Key & Peele sketch.
