FanArt_ink.Deep

MTGinktober dives into Day 20, "Deep," starring Kiora, the Crashing Wave, lil' Hedron Crabastian, and a dinglehopper for your troubles!

Ok, now that Inktober is over (I'm writing this 11/3/17, furiously scrambling to update the archives), this has proven to be my most popular piece, at least when it debuted on Twitter. What can we learn from this? Well, it proves my hypothesis that the world only cares about fan art (and this piece incorporates two intellectual properties, Magic and Disney). And it also confirms that within Magic specifically, people mostly (but not totally) just care about Planeswalkers. I should note, I strove this year to draw fewer PWs, and ended up often focusing on legendaries, though I also made an effort to draw regular old creatures that hold special places in my heart.

Fun Facts: For this piece I decided to see if an illustration would have a bigger impact if it followed the same old formula of prominent Planeswalker in a wacky pose. Surprise, surprise, this is how we do it. To keep it in theme, I wanted to "go deep" with the references, so I thought it was a great opportunity to pull the old mix-n-match card, which is how I arrived at the The Little Mermaid crossover. There was another property I had in mind that I'd been waiting all month to use, but the proper prompt never presented itself (recall, I don't look at the prompts in advance of the day-of drawing, but I was confident I'd be able to jimmy the theme in at some point...and I did, but more on that later).

Easter Eggs: This is a play on that scene in The Little Mermaid, when Ariel finds the dinglehopper, but I wanted to go deeper, so rather than just have Kiora find a fork, I featured a similar bag to the one the mermaid had. Except, going further--or deeper--I referenced a Gucci bag, but changed the logo from GG to UG, or blue-green in Magic parlance, signifying Kiora's signature colors so far. Since we had a little space and time left in the budget, I squeezed in Sebastian hanging on for dear life, while still looking on disapprovingly. But again, keeping the spirit of "go deep" I had him clinging to a hedron so he could be a reference to Hedron crab.

Not normal,

Fun_StitchyPooh

A couple quick sketches from an jElementary visit before I had to bolt off to a second shift somewhere else.

These jKids don't hold back and level you with enthusiasm. Some struggle to contain their excitement, almost bursting from the effort. It's really neat. I could do without all the hand-holding, though. If they're not trying to shake your hand (I think they do that because they're conditioned to think of interaction with westerners as necessarily involving hand-shaking) they'll want to hold your hand--either to lead you somewhere or just for the sheer heck of holding your hand.

That's cute and everything but GERMS!!!!!!!!!!!! Please understand, dear jKids, it's not you, it's me. And the millions of tiny micro-organisms on your tiny, little, delicate snot-drenched fingers.

Fun_hws.GreatTeacher

Here is our final homework sketches for the school term!  The jKids have been hard(ly) at work these past few summer months, and come next week, we're finally on summer break for a couple weeks!  You should see how much they freak out when I tell them in the US we get 2-3months off!

Anyway, here we go.  First we have a girl for a guy who wishes he had a girlfriend(!).  Next is an quick little illustration after a jKid hipped me to Nichijou. We've got some Mickeys I drew and modded for a worksheet.

Then we've got a hamburger for a student who asked me to draw something for her but didn't specify what (as well as a squirrel thing for a similar unspecified request).  Then we've got Buchyake from Duel Masters Victory V.  We've also got an Anorith and Chikorita for a jPokeFan and a bananamod from that same Mickey worksheet.  They're bananas talking about Duel Masters...ya know, like they do.

Finally the anime-y dudes in the set are the teacher from GTO, Great Teacher Onizuka, which has been making the rounds amongst the jKids since its dorama recently launched.  I drew from the manga, though, cuz believe it or not, I'm not great with likenesses and I don't really enjoy drawing real people anyway.

Oh gosh, it's getting sweaty here in Japan...

Fun_hws.GhostTouch

The jKids wrote a lot about ghosts for what "surprises" them.  A couple of them mentioned horror movies.  But mostly ghosts (and even one or two obake).

I trolled a kid who doesn't like English with images of a Zebra, coco, and something sunny, which are all Japanese things with English names.

One girl likes hamburgers so she gets a cheesy burger.

But a lot of ghosts.

That long-necked rokurokubi is one of my least favorite yokai in Japanese lore, so I tried to draw an appealing one as a personal challenge. Did I succeed? Who cares.

As for what makes them sad, one kid wrote about getting his heartbroken after confessing his love, so I illustrated his tale of woahhh in a 5 cent comic.

But a lot of ghosts.

And Stitch for some reason.

Fun_INTYWIDFAL

A shot of one of my desks. I know I've posted this delio before, but who's that tinkering in the background behind my MacGuyvered-out, jacked-up glasses?  I'll never tell. (It's Tinkerbell.)

If you squint hard, you'll find a draw I did on a kid's desk with his whacked-out Cruella DeVille style pencil.

And this is a drawing I made using chopsticks stained deep with food, sadness.

AV_InkRed

Another postcard today, this one starring that one Incredibles character voiced by recently-minted Daily Show contributor, and John Hodgman half-a-man, Sarah Vowell, by day known as Violet.

Violet wasn't nearly as emotastic as I would have liked, but I do like the line about being gangly and only getting ganglier. (WOW! I just thought of a perfect character to postcard...!)

The kids liked this one, even though they couldn't think of her name during the 20-questions guessing portion of the game. Blew their minds when I gave them the hint: her name is a flower and a color. This one's my favorite postcard so far, but the one on deck is looking pretty neat...

AV_Mixi

Last time we drew Supaman, and to continue the line of crazy-popular characters I've managed to avoid drawing for so long, I did this postcard of Mixi. He's standing on Chopper's hat, symbolizing his status as primordial cute-character of international renown.

Also, I'm not Canadian.

YDN_zlm.DannyGlover

"Hemmerling for Mitchell" would make a great band name, and that's before you even add in "The" and throw in some numbers!

Zero Like Me #26: Danny Glover
<- Previous Comic...Next Comic ->
-First Comic-

Easter Eggs: "Yale" in panel 1, that dude's costume, #52 is George Knox.

Fun Facts: Today's setting is the Yale Rep. I love Angels in the Outfield, I was and still am a bit like JP (not the whole reticent-to-speak-thing; I mean I was and still am a bit of a little black boy looking up to an older white boy as my surrogate brother. Oh, wait, no...it is the whole reticent-to-speak thing, never mind).

Baa: I saw Ranch Wilder perform the role of Mr. Doolittle in Pygmalion at Culture Draw sophomore year, but I totally forgot to go to last Tuesday's draw...dangit.

Ok, I'm excited to start getting into some continued narrative next week, so even though each comic will be self contained, there is more to glean between comics.

Also, this comic is dedicated to and inspired by Professor R. Stepto, one of Yale's greatest, who I wish I could have studied poetry with (after an incredible semester learning about AfAm literature sophomore year), but I ended up going with another poetry teacher. Hence the Hemmerling/Mitchell connection.

Also-also...Herald debut later today! Trying something newish.

Fun_CallMeBeepMe

My snooze alarm killed half a day of drawing time, but I was able to get this in as my warm up.

Easter Eggs: She's got a buzzer.

Fun Facts: It's an inside joke, started this past GBAB, the year's final Quizbowl event, which is composed of teammember-centric questions. Pretty revealing. Pretty funny.

Baa: I'm hosting a Magic: the Gathering or Pokemon (cards or DS) game tonight 7pm, as well as Monday, likely in the JE computer lab. Reach me via email or cell if you feel inclined. There'll be candy or Monster.

Thumbing through old Banners found laying around college libraries is depressing re: how fleeting time is.
