MTGinktober rages into Day 17, "Salty," starring Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar; Gyome, Master Chef; and Flavor Judge!

I could have done another nerd rage piece, but I've definitely done that already, and it's kinda too easy at this point to think of Magic and flipping tables.  So I went with just fuming off at losing, and what better occasion than a cooking contest that presumably can be lost by using too much salt?

Fun Facts:  And who better for this piece than returning chump Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar, who makes her second MTGinktober appearance.  I wasn't sure who to cast as the judge, but then I stumbled upon a fowl that fit the bill, perhaps here better than other places.  This was a pretty cathartic piece because I hate losing enough already, but I hate when the winner is also all jolly and oblivious.

Easter Eggs: The dish Gyome made was Gluttonous Slug, apparently seasoned to perfection, and the flame-faced Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar's was Toxrill, the Corrosive--hers is certainly more ambitious, but she has a ton of salt shakers to Gyome's one, and Toxrill's even foaming.  The upper background is a mix of the Iron Chef catchphrase, "Who's Cuisine Reigns Supreme?" and the hooks and "monkey" from The Meathook Massacre.

FanArt_ink.Snacks

MTGinktober munches into Day 11, "Snacks," starring Melira, Sylvok Outcast; Melira's Snacks; the Three Little Pigs; and Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar!

In the research phase, I stumbled across a card called Melira's Snacks, and instantly knew I wanted to draw that, as it helps cross off another expression from our "Expressions of Magic" checklist and I haven't drawn Melira in a while.  I've already drawn a Test Card for Bad Dog, and even a blank Test Card for Trek, but Melira's Snacks is a blank, frameless card, so I don't know what that means, but it's a card expression I haven't drawn yet, and this should lock up all the kinds of test cards there are so far.

Fun Facts:  For the scenario, I wanted Melira's third run to be her joyfully treating her pals, and the Three Little Pigs would be thrilled to chow down, but her bud Asmo--who makes her fourth MTGinktober appearance--couldn't help but be snooty about anyone else's culinary endeavors.  This is only the Second Little Pig's namesake MTGinktober appearance.

Easter Eggs:  Some favorite foods here, including those OG Food Token jelly cookies and croissant (which debuted in the fully original prompt, "Snack,"...c'mon, Jake...).  Plus a personal favorite in that concha, though we always called it, "Mexican bread," and only relatively recently learned it has a real name, aside from "melon pan," I guess.  And then the WOE Gingerbrute--who makes his second-and-a-half appearance--is piecing together he's about to get got.

MTGinktober reveals and floats Day 22, "Open Angel," starring Exalted Angel!

I just couldn't sleep so I knew I was going into this one pretty tired and on severely limited time, so rather than a neat little scene of an Angel waiting for Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar to open her curbside eatery, we went with a dramatically more straightforward concept of a morph shell popping a real OG out.

Fun Facts: While I tend to try to give less famous legends time to shine, it's always neat when I can draw a non-legendary altogether, and this is one of the few that contains no legends at all, in fact--I had considered plopping Ixidor somewhere, but there just wasn't time.  Anyway, I loved getting back to some hatching on the armor thingy.  And I just got some new ink supplies in, so I'm eager to give those a spin as MTGinktober winds down.

Easter Eggs: The morph shell here is based on one of the very worst cards in all of Magic, Break Open.  Also, while we try to run a buttoned-up show around here, we relaxed that a bit here given the prompt.

FanArt_ink.Spicy

MTGinktober sears into Day 12, "Spicy," starring Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar; Dina, Soul Steeper; Chandra, Hope's Beacon; and Atsushi, the Blazing Sky!

This was another mercifully light one, so my hand can recover, as the pain of this marathon endurance test is certainly starting to set in.  It was a toss up between having Dina serving some terrible tea or Asmo hitting with some atrocious entrĂ©e, and food made more sense.  Plus the idea of Chandra crying from spicy food was a bonus attraction to this concept, since she famously cries in her latest card.

Fun Facts:  It looks like the official prompt has the typo "Spicey," which maybe subconsciously inspired this composition since the idea is Asmo had a type on the menu for fresh caught Atsushi, but they thought they were ordering sushi.  Anyway, this is the chef's third MTGinktober appearance, and the brewer's, and I've officially lost count of how many times the favorite firebrand's been featured--though this is the first time I've drawn her in actual fire mode, so I should have all iterations covered at this point.  Atsushi debuts.

Easter Eggs:  The background elements come from Asmo's card, but there's the "dancing monkey" from The Meathook Massacre, plus another personal goal furthered--I want to draw every kind of card expression available in Magic, and every time I think I've hit them all, I realize there's another, so today we scratch off "Arena-exclusive" from the list via the oinker in Overcooked.  Just a couple more styles of card left, by my count, then I'll truly have drawn them all.

FanArt_ink.LeakWizard

MTGinktober drips and spells Day 23, "Leak Wizard," starring Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar and Emry, Lurker of the Loch!

I've been wanting to draw Asmo for a while, and with a vaguely food-related prompt plus the surprising fact that she's a Wizard, we were finally in a position to do so.  I also like putting characters in more playful situations, so it was great to have her goofing on Emry for the shot.

Fun Facts: This is Emry's second MTGinktober appearance, though we almost had her star in this year's Loop prompt, for all the shenanigannary she's often involved with.

Easter Eggs: The soda is based on the Coca-Cola logo of course, but it says Nicol Bolas.  The background comes from one of my all-time favorite combo pieces, Famished Paladin, since I would think he of all people would be hungry for a picnic.
