YDN_zlm.Special

Gosh, that must be so awesome...

Zero Like Me #48:
With Beauty and Justice For All Pt.1 - Special

Schoolwork is unavoidable recently, but it's almost over, and then we can get back in business.

Final artwork and full update coming soon, although I will say that this was supposed to run a while ago, but a bigger story came up out of nowhere.

Quick Update re: comment #1--I don't like to break the 4th wall in comics unnecessarily so I likely won't address this in a comic, however I did want to do a post about it on this site, but I didn't think anyone cared to know. Basically having a cat sidekick is based on the supportive characteristics I find in "Puss in Boots" and my family's cats. And it is because I am weird that I made these two connections. I'm not sure if your comment is a backhanded compliment but, you know, sorry to ruin your day if I did. --Reuxben 11/6/09

Herald_zlm.Trick

We put the Boo! in "boo-hoo."

Zero Like Me #47
Zero Romance #8:
Trick
<- Previous...Next->
-First-

Easter Eggs: Today's setting is outside Woolsey/Commons, and the references are to some Yale secret societies. The captions come from Mad Max movie posters and stuff.

Fun Facts: November 7, 2011, posted from Japan, this comic has finally been updated. Not my best work, but man, I was in one heck of a bind when I drew this (see the original post's text below for more). Alexis Blight is representing Skull and Bones and her design seemed to have gone over best.

Baa: I never wanted Skull and Bones, just Scroll and Key. But no dice. Ugh.

[update: final art, updated text, at top.]

Technically still haven't missed a deadline...right? And if this Frankensteinian comic isn't a horror, then what is? I hate you too.

They pushed my deadline up even earlier since a couple of them had a field trip to the New York Times early Friday morning, so I had a sinking suspicion I wasn't getting this comic done in time.

Knowing it was likely not going to be ready for print, as Herald Comics Editor, I got so depressed I wanted to cut myself. But then jack kelly showed up and figured out how I could make it to print after all.

Stupid midterm garbage is making it impossible to breathe/draw so I can't even finish pencils, but the real comic will appear prolly Thanksgiving week, so this failure will remain here until then...

Did I mention I hate you?

Herald_zlm.OldCampus

Tee hee...she said "But"!

Zero Like Me #30
Zero Romance #2:
Old Campus
<- Previous Comic...Next Comic ->
-First Comic-

Easter Eggs: Romance 2 in panel-ish 3; "Yale" in panel-ish 4; Dracht and Ben's costumes merged; a scroll, key, skull, bone, Guffinium, and 'stache.

Fun Facts: Today's setting is the OC corner between McClellan (JE's annex) and LC. Tried channeling Eisner's insane style.

Baa: I used to be painfully jealous of freshmen (2011) who got to experience Freshman Year meanwhile I was cursed at having to move on, then I became more wistfully envious ('12) knowing that they will soon lose that status, and now ('13) I've finally gotten to the point where I don't feel like they are robbing or displacing me, but that they are just there. I kind of pity them.

This came out hecka pixelated in the Herald, but as always: this site displays the most crisp and updated versions of all my artwork (which is why I guess I don't even feel upset about the bad printing, something that used to really fingernail-blackboard me).

I put a lot of effort into this comic, and yet I'm oddly placid knowing it got insanely pixelated. That is what frustrates me. Same thing like how I hate that I can't bring myself to hate my old--I've said too much.

Herald_mc.UltraPeepi

Last Crash: Smalltown girl Bee Farnam watches her only friend die.

Some weeks, especially this, really make me want to quit everything.

Monsta Crash #12: UltraPeepi
Next Comic: Here
Previous Comic: Here
First Comic: Here

Easter Eggs: Crash 12 in panel 4. SK fail in panel 5, callback to Crash 2.

Fun Facts: Ultra Peepi is a mix of the original form, Totoro, and a Laputian sentry. While drawing this comic, I also wrote another comic I will draw in exactly 365 days.

In addition, that generic-insult jack kelly spews forth "secret" and "confessions."

Baa: I'll never forget when my high school Spanish teacher said to me, "Doesn't it feel great to be wanted?" referencing my incoming college acceptance letters. He meant to emphasize being in-demand, not that nobody wanted me otherwise (true, though--strange how people start talking to you after you get accepted to Yale...), but I agreed, it felt great to have people actually vying for me for the first time in my life.

And for the first time since getting into colleges, I finally felt truly validated, legitimated, accepted; like all the suffering leading up till then was finally, finally worth it: I got accepted into Garry Trudeau's society, the ultimate seal of approval for someone trying so hard to match him (taped on the inside of my door is a YDN clipping: my ZLM debut, which has Doonesbury printed right above it; I see it every day). Like Yale, I got in without friends, connections, or anything; pure merit--you can imagine how amazing I felt.

And then it was all a joke. At first I thought, "well, at least I felt great for a day," but then it really went south as midnight ticked closer and I knew the real deal wasn't coming either. I've never felt so profound a loss as Thursday.

I mean, what do I have to do to prove myself? It's like losing a footrace: you do the absolute most your body can physically do, and you still failed, powerless to do any bit more. But I feel like this is what I get for betting everything on art.

It wasn't about power or prestige or elitism or anything, it was about feeling validated and I failed. I don't care about anything else at Yale but art, and now the one thing I care about feels meaningless.
